Many families carry multiple insurance policies. Account members may be covered on one or more of these policies. Dependent children that are covered by two plans have primary coverage from the parent whose birthday month falls earliest in the year and secondary coverage from the parent whose birthday falls later in the year (The Birthday Rule).
When parents are not living in the same home, the children’s primary coverage is with the parent with whom they live even if the policy holder is a step-parent.
First Nations (NIHB), Social Services and Veteran’s plans are always the final policy billed when these patients have dual coverage.
Enter Dual Policies
Entering Dual Policies is simple. Begin by creating (Section 3.2) or finding (Section 3.3) the primary policy. Once that plan is added, create a new record and find or build the second policy.
- Click the Create Record icon .
- Select the first Policy Holder from the drop-down list.
- Click Find.
- If policy is not found, follow 3.2; if policy is found follow 3.3.
- Once added, visit the Dependent box (upper right) and confirm each family member’s Relationship, whether they are covered and blank out reset dates if the plan renews annually.
